In the dynamic world of interior design, successful projects always stem from designers whose creativity, passion, and skill bring the space to life. At the heart of every great design project we share are those who infuse their personal vision and expertise into every project they tackle, transforming environments and enhancing experiences. INTERVIEW:

1. Could you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in interior design?

Liz: As an immigrant architect from Venezuela, I began working in interior design as a natural extension of my architectural training. This career path, closely tied to architecture, allowed me to apply my design principles on a more detailed and personal scale, focusing on creating functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces. I quickly discovered a deep passion for the creativity and direct impact that interior design offers, leading me to continue pursuing it as my main goal. The ability to transform environments and improve the quality of life for clients has been incredibly rewarding, making it a fulfilling career choice.

2. In your own home, what style of interior design do you lean toward?

Liz: I lean toward Mid-Century Modern with a bit of Glam!

3. You were a part of the design team, along with Elysha Lepper, for OEB Victoria. What inspired the design concept for this particular location?

Liz: We have been collaborating with OEB for some time and have developed a strong understanding of their preferences. Inspired by the location near the bay, we crafted a design that embodies a fresh, familiar, fun, and welcoming atmosphere.

4. Were there any specific challenges that either you or Elysha faced during the design process, and how did you overcome them?

Liz: Every project comes with its own set of challenges, and this one was no exception. One recurring issue we've encountered across multiple locations is the problem of echo. For this project, it was the first time we addressed it by incorporating acoustic panels directly into the design. We chose an egg-shaped configuration for the panels, integrating them with globe pendant lights. This approach not only solved the acoustic problem but also resulted in a distinctive and visually striking design.

5. Can you describe a moment in your design career that has been particularly rewarding or memorable to you?

Liz: I've had many memorable moments in my career as a designer, but one that stands out was working on OEB in Newport Beach. We were designing a space that used to be a restaurant, and the client wanted to minimize demolition as much as possible. As usual, we presented a few options for them to choose from. The last option was my favorite, but surprisingly, the other members of the OEB team preferred different options. I couldn't quite understand why they didn’t see the logic in the last one — until the Chef reviewed all the options. To my delight, the last option was also his favorite, and he made a point of congratulating me on the excellent work on the layout.

6. What role does client collaboration play in your design process?

Liz: Client collaboration plays a crucial role in my design process. Before starting any project, I make sure to understand the client's goals and desires thoroughly. I ensure that their vision is fully integrated into the design.

7. How do you stay up to date with the latest trends and innovations in interior design?

Liz: I stay up to date with the latest trends by using Pinterest, following architectural and interior design accounts on social media, reading magazines, and watching TV programs related to modern architecture and interior design.

8. What advice would you give to aspiring interior designers looking to make their mark in the industry?

Liz: The advice I would give to aspiring interior designers is, first and foremost, to be sure that this is the career you love. Prepare yourself thoroughly—get a solid education, stay updated with the latest trends, and learn software that will help you bring your designs to life.

9. Worldwide, do you have a favorite interior space, and what about it resonates with you?

Liz: I would say The Versace Restaurant in Miami is truly unique, with its architecture and decoration exuding luxury in every detail. From the moment you enter through the grand gates into the lush courtyard, the ornate decorations and lavish furnishings tell a story of Versace’s passion for art, fashion, and opulence. While it’s not a place I would want to live, every single detail is absolutely fascinating to me.

10. Can you share any upcoming projects or exciting plans you have for the future?

Liz: I am excited for the variety of new projects that are coming, and I am planning to become more knowledgeable about sustainability, with designs that incorporate eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient appliances, and environmentally responsible practices. I also want to get more training in Photoshop, as it’s a crucial tool for presentations. In my personal plans, I am planning to go to Venezuela soon to visit my family! :)
